The 2023 Sue Snyder Memorial SummerFun horseshoe tournament in Newberry, SC is scheduled for the weekend of April 22-23. This year’s event will be sponsored by the City of Newberry, and the deadline for entries is April 12th.

The SummerFun room block for Opera House Hampton Inn, if you plan on staying there, is open, but only 25 rooms available downtown on a first come, first serve basis. The rate is $114 per night for regular rooms, ask for the SummerFun2023 rate. The cut off date for this rate is April 6th. Number of the hotel is 803-276-6666.

The Horseshoe Tour Hall of Fame ceremony and reception will be held on Friday evening at the Firehouse Conference Room from 5:00-6:30 PM, adjacent to the Newberry Opera House. All players, family, and friends are invited to attend, drinks and light refreshments will be served. Congratulations to Maxine Griffith, from Tennessee, who will be inducted based on her achievement points she earned throughout the years.

The “Pork in the Park” festival in Newberry, SC is the same weekend as the Horseshoe Tour tournament. There will be BBQ food, and beverages, also live band music going on Friday evening until 8:00 PM, and Saturday all day. The activities will be downtown in the city park area, just across from the Hampton Inn.

In an effort to continue funding the Horseshoe Tour “Big Game” points payout, the Tour staff has decided to increase the tournament entry fee to $90 starting in 2023. This $10 increase is the first in a few years, and will bolster the payout from top to bottom in the standings. This also gives players the opportunity to partner with the Horseshoe Tour, and the individual sites to help fund it.

In the past we have offered the “Open Division” at all sites, then only at first time sites, but with the lack of entries to even run this division, we have decided to eliminate this division all together. The fact that players are now opting to play in the Prime Divisions in order to play the entire weekend, and receive all the benefits of the Prime Division, has basically initiated this move.

We have used two different methods in the past for breaking “match” ties in the finals, but starting in 2023 we will go to a much simpler method of a 10 shoe tiebreaker in all classes.

A new document will be added to the website listing all the Horseshoe Tour Hall of Famers. The criteria for entering the HOF is already listed on the site.

Updated versions of the tour entry form, the 2023 schedule, the new big game chart, and rules have been uploaded.

Our final horseshoe event of the year is in Morgan City/Patterson, Louisiana on October 29-30. The deadline for entries is October 19th. The Hampton Inn & Suites in Morgan City, LA will be the host hotel, ask for the Cajun Coast Classic room block to get the $109 per night rate.

Our next Horseshoe Tour stop is in North Platte, NE on September 24-25. The deadline for entries is Wednesday, September 14th, and it’s never too early to get your entry in. The site has 30 horseshoe courts with lighting.

Two 30 shoe grudge games will be played on Friday, September 23rd in North Platte prior to the doubles tournament, deemed the “family feud”, and will pit two brothers, Marcus Thomsen verses Joe Thomsen, from Nebraska in the first game, and the second game will pit two sisters, Marlene Ray verses Maxine Griffith from Tennessee. One game only, $100 to the winners. These games will be streaming live on Face Book starting at 5:00 PM.
